SCHOOL LEADERSHIP
This week we saw the 2012 Executive Student Leader positions awarded to Yr7 students at the Investiture Ceremony in our Student Centre. Councillor Tim Dwyer presented the badges to the leaders and made an address about successful leadership.
Our leaders for 2012 are:
School Captains: Emily & Daygin
School Vice Captains: Emma & Alexander
Student Councillors: Kirilly, Olivia, Tess, April, Luke, Kyle, Tim & Leroy.
The process for this year’s School Captain election was introduced in October last year when Yr6 students were encouraged to become Student Leaders. It was very similar to the previous process with the exception being that students had to be a Student Leader before they could be considered for any Executive Leadership position in 2012. This year, by the end of the term, I will be introducing this process to our current Yr 5 and 6 students so that they too can become part of the Student Leadership team.
“ The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” (Ralph Nader)
In week 1 of this term, all Student Leaders who nominated, were eligible to be elected by Yr 7 students and staff to be Student Councillors. 6 boy and 6 girl Councillors were elected, then those 12 children all made a speech to gain selection by their peers and staff for School Captain. From the results, the boy’s and girl’s School Captains were elected. The students and staff then voted for House Captains. They are:
Kings:April, Eliza ,Leroy, Daniel
Shelly:Tess, Nevaada ,Kyle, Jake
Dicky:Olivia, Abbey ,Luke, Jed
Moffat:Georgie, Dany ,Tim, Ryan
Congratulations to our new Student Leaders and to the Executive Leaders on their successful election. They will now be involved in a range of activities as well as representing the student body in decision making forums with me. I look forward to the outstanding contributions that each will bring to our school this year.
WELCOME BBQ
Thanks to the P&C for organising the BBQ breakfast last Friday morning. It was noted by some new parents that it was good to see so many parents as well as staff involved in the organisation. The BBQ was an opportunity to welcome new families to the school and I thank those who supported the P&C and for being part of the school community.
INFORMATION SESSIONS
All class teachers will have an information session for parents to explain the class procedures and expectations for the year (some have already had theirs). If you miss the session, you can talk to the teacher or give them an email address so they can send out an information sheet with the content covered in the meetings. This is a great way of knowing what is going on in your child’s classroom.
OUR VISION
I speak regularly to the students about our purpose at Caloundra Primary, which is Promoting Proud Traditions of Educational Excellence . Everything we do as members of the school – either as a parent, student or staff member – must be focussed on this vision. Together, I hope we can achieve outstanding things at our great school.
INSPIRE YOUR CHILD WITH THE LOVE OF READING
With 2012 declared the National Year of Reading, now is the perfect time to give your child a gift that will last a lifetime — a love of reading. The Queensland Department of Education and Training is supporting the National Year of Reading to help emphasise the importance of literacy skills, increasing the number of children reading books and promoting the role of libraries. Our school will take part in some of the activities which will be held throughout the year to help inspire a new generation of readers and remind all Queenslanders that it’s never too late to learn to read and — just as importantly — learn to love it.

PARENT INFORMATION SESSIONS
For those of you who were not able to come along to the sessions please make sure that you have received a copy of the information that was discussed on the day.
OPEN NIGHTS CHANGES
Unfortunately I got a little ahead of myself with dates and times for the sessions in 2012. The following information is correct; please adjust your calendars accordingly.
The following changes will be made on the school calendar and website and newsletter.
Term One - Open Night replaced by parent teacher interviews to be conducted in the last week of Term 1 or the first week of Term 2.
Term Two - An afternoon session, during school time to present work to parents.
Term Three - Open Night as planned
Tern Four - TBA.
SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR
This week and next week students will concentrate on the Core Value “Be Safe”. Students will be involved in a lesson, helping to explain the School Value and how it can be practised at school. A reminder to everyone that Friday the 16th of March is “No Bully Day”. On this day everyone is encouraged to wear something orange, either clothing or a ribbon. A poster competition will take place at the same time with anti-bullying messages being the theme.
SUSTAINABILITY
At Caloundra Primary, we support and practise sustainable actions. You might have heard recently that Caloundra Primary has become a station for the re-cycling of batteries. You might not know this but batteries when placed in council dumps do not help the environment. Now you can bring your batteries in to school and place them in the plastic wheelie bin at the office. The only batteries we are not allowed to collect are car batteries. They need to be taken to the local re-cycling centre. So, get involved and help the environment.
LATE ARRIVALS/EARLY DEPARTURES
We wish to remind parents that all late arrivals and early departures are to be recorded through the office. This is Department of Education and Training procedure. Late arrivals going directly to class will be asked by teachers to return to the office to obtain a late arrival slip.
Parents wishing to collect their children early need to sign their children out as well as collecting the early departure slip.

CURRICULUM NEWS
Well it certainly has been a busy start to the school year for both students and staff. 2012 marks the beginning of the National Curriculum implementation with Maths, English and Science being implemented this year with a gradual rollout over the next 3 years. Further subjects will be added year by year. The National Curriculum implementation has been well resourced by both Education Queensland and Queensland Studies Authority and teachers have access to a myriad of ICT, Multimedia and class resources to assist and promote student learning.
Along with the National Curriculum, Caloundra SS students can now access Mathletics and Reading Eggs across every year level. I would encourage all parents to pay or commence paying the Student Resource Scheme to ensure that their children can continue to access these great resources both at school and home. If you are unsure whether you have paid this levy please see the ladies at the office.

FROM THE OFFICE
Thank you to all who paid their Year 7 student’s deposit for the 2012 Canberra trip. The maximum number of students able to attend has been reached along with a waiting list.
In the very near future, look out for the letter home with the final cost and the date and amount of instalments that will need to be met.
2012 Student Resource Scheme
As mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter, this Friday is the last day for payment in full or part for the Student Resource Scheme (SRS). After this time access will be denied to any student not participating in the SRS.
The full cost is $65.00 per student or a part payment of $20.00 per student now. Remaining instalments would be $20.00 by Friday 23 March and $25.00 by Friday 27 April.
Parents do have the option of purchasing private subscriptions for the software packages covered by the SRS, but each would cost approximately $100.
Just a reminder to make sure that payment envelopes are named. It is almost impossible to trace the student for whom the payment is intended if the envelope is unnamed. ALL money is to be placed in the “silver box” attached to the back door of the admin area. Please do not give money to teachers or leave it on the office desk.
FINAL PAYMENT DATES:
Yr 4A, 4/5B Shelly Beach—Tuesday 28 February 2012.
P&C NEWS
It was wonderful to see so many students, parents and teachers enjoying a yummy hot breakfast last Friday, at our first BBQ breakfast for the year. Thank you to the parents and student leaders who jumped in to lend a hand. A special thank you to Mr Logan who donned an apron at the last minute to help us out and did a wonderful job.
P&C AGM & General Meeting
Our first task for the year is to encourage existing and new parents to join the P&C for 2012, and to elect a new Executive Committee. The Annual General Meeting will be held in the staffroom on Monday 20th February 2012, at 6pm. Followed by a general meeting. BOOKFEST 2012
Caloundra Primary School P&C are holding our first ever Bookfest
on the 12th & 13th May.
We need your help to collect unwanted books, lifestyle magazines, DVD’s and games from family, friends and the community. A collection box has been placed outside the tuckshop for the items to be placed in. We have some wonderful helpers who are sorting the books for us which is a fantastic help. We now need lots and lots and lots of books to make it a huge success!
If you have any business contacts in the local community who would be able to display a Bookfest poster (A3 size) please contact Yvette Wensley on
mob 0407 713 084, email pandc@caloundrss.eq.edu.au, or leave your name and contact details at the office.
Bunnings BBQ
Following the success of the Bunnings BBQ we hosted last year (we raised over $1000) we are hosting the BBQ again on Saturday 24th March at Bunnings Caloundra. We would love some wonderful volunteers to help us out again. If you can spare an hour or two anytime between 8am and 4.30pm please email us on pandc@caloundrss.eq.edu.au or leave your name and contact details at the office.
Craft Club
The craft club will be back in action soon! We are currently collecting Pauls milk bottle caps to raise money for supplies. Every cap collected, 10 cents will go to the craft club. Please place clean Pauls (only) milk bottle caps in the special container at the Office, thank you.
LUNCH ON LIGHTHOUSE
Please be advised that “Fairy Bread” and the large size “Play Water” is no longer available for purchase.
NEWS FROM HELPING HANDS
It is February, but already we are thinking about the Easter holidays which commence the 2nd April – 8 days in duration.
In the first newsletter item for the month, we discussed the new School Age Framework – a part of the new framework is to actively encourage children to participate in the program (with ideas and self initiated play).
A very successful initiative by the children has been our “Salon de Paris”, hairdressing salon. The children were encouraged in health & hygiene, using gloves when handling other children’s hair, sterilizing combs and hair clips, etc – we have several budding hair dressers at OSHC. They also had a great deal of fun with ‘Crazy Hair Day’ – using different coloured hairspray to create various fun hair styles.
We would actively encourage all our parents to participate in the program – we are sure that you all have something that we would love to hear or learn about or if you are a bit shy, then an activity suggestion, would be great.
For information on our program or information on bookings, please do not hesitate to contact the Coordinator or staff on 0457-735-704 or email to caloundra@helpinghandsnetwork.com.au

Helping Hands
On Wednesday of this week our Year 5 students participated in a workshop with well known indigenous artist, Arthur Conlan.
Below is a journal recount of this very enjoyable activity.
Today I went to see Kerry and Arthur. Kerry taught us about the aboriginal people, we also did a dance and threw boomerangs. I thought the dance was funny. I wouldn’t throw the boomerang (I was scared it was going to come back and hit me in the head). I really liked it when Kerry played the didgeridoo, he was great. Then it was time for the art, we drew a turtle with pastels. Arthur was so fantastic that I wanted to keep it! It was a bit tricky at first, I had a awesome day with Kerry and Arthur Conlan learning about aboriginal people, dance, didgeridoos and art and of course themselves.
